FACETS is looking to hire a mission-driven leader to join our team as Director, Family Housing Stabilization, a program serving families experiencing homelessness or at-risk of homelessness in region 1 of Fairfax County. The Program Director provides overall supervision and direction of staff for the Next Steps Family Program, an emergency shelter and prevention program located in scattered site apartments in Alexandria, VA. This individual serves as a leader and manager of this program and its committed team, as well as representing the program internally and externally to clients, stakeholders and funders.

The successful candidate will have experience in homeless shelter operations and management, current knowledge of best practices in homeless services and the challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness, a good working knowledge of HUD’s definitions of homelessness, the Family Homeless Services System in Fairfax County, and Coordinated Entry. A candidate that is an experienced leader, motivator, fast learner, enthusiastic, highly motivated, skilled in providing services in the community, with excellent organizational skills as a must. Bachelor’s degree required and 5 years of progressively responsible social services experience is preferred. An MSW or other master’s degree is a plus as is Bi-lingual (English/Spanish).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manages staff, operations, policies, procedures, and reporting for FACETS’ emergency shelter, homeless prevention, and rapid re-housing programs.
  • Ensures that participants in the program receive timely professional services in support of their housing goals and that residents have a clean, safe environment during their shelter stay.
  • Works to create a positive work environment serving a high stress need, with a focus on employee retention and growth. Leads recruitment and retention efforts for program staff.
  • Create, monitor and implement policies and procedures to cover best practices, on-call procedures, program development, etc. to ensure the program meets its operational goals.
  • Provides leadership to ensure that staff understand funding eligibility criteria when referring families for emergency shelter or homeless prevention/diversion services.
  • When needed triage referrals with Coordinated Services Planning (CSP), Intake Coordinators (IC), and Community Case Managers (CCMs)
  • Serve as liaison between landlords and Fairfax County in operating the Next Steps Family Program
  • Ensures that Shelter unit turnover and maintenance requests are completed in a timely manner for the Next Steps Family Program
  • Manages the budget for program expenditures, including overflow motels, and budget projections, tracking and reporting
  • Manage Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) rapid rehousing and homeless prevention financial assistance.
  • Attends various regional meetings throughout Fairfax County, establishes and maintains community partnerships to provide additional resources for program participants, and generates and distributes housing resources to FACETS staff.
  • Participates in program staff meetings and conferences to share ideas and plans; works cooperatively with staff to meet FACETS goals.
  • Uses automated technology including HMIS and hard copy files to maintain, update, and report on case data, goal attainment, and outcomes in a timely manner
  • Prepares proposals, reports, and statistics for submission to funding sources with the Senior Program Director’s supervision.
  • Represents FACETS in the community, in accord with Agency Mission, Vision and Code of Ethics
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • 5 years of progressively responsible social services experience.
  • 2 years in a Shelter leadership role.
  • Requires knowledge and belief in “Housing First” and “Rapid Rehousing” philosophy and strategies.
  • Knowledge or understanding of tenant’s rights and responsibilities as well as “strengths based” case management.
  • Knowledge of current social service, homeless, and housing issues and methods/approaches to address issues
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Strong public speaking skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software, including Microsoft Excel
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including some evenings and weekends.
  • Must pass criminal background and Child Protective Services background checks.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to attend occasional meetings at other FACETS office locations within Fairfax County, including 3 annual organization-wide fundraising events each year.

Salary Range:

$65,000 – $75,000 annually
