Homework Helpers Needed!

May 14, 2019 in Uncategorized

The children at our community centers are working hard to do well in school— But we need your help! Our Education and Community Development Centers work hard to keep the kids engaged at the centers each day afterschool, making sure they are on track for academic success. By becoming a regular Homework Helper volunteer, you’ll be making a real difference in the life of a child. Homework Helpers make a commitment once a week to help children do their homework and form a bond with them to keep them focused on what’s important, even when life can be difficult in the communities we serve. For more information, or to become a Homework Helper, please email our Volunteer Manager, Tammy Voss, at

Thank you for an INCREDIBLE Taste of Fall!

November 2, 2018 in Uncategorized

What an INCREDIBLE night, thanks to you! Thank you to those who supported the 2nd annual A Very Special Taste of Fall Gala! Under the sparkling ceiling of the INOVA Center for Personalized Health, the FACETS family gathered last Saturday, Oct. 19th, to raise critically needed funds for those suffering from hunger, homelessness, and poverty. You helped blow the ROOF off that sparkling ceiling as we raised over $120,000! You enjoyed fantastic food stations overflowing with fall treats while we heard from our longtime supporter, Congressman Gerry Connolly, FACETS Executive Director Joe Fay, and our courageous client, Mikora.

Mikora was moved to tears as she spoke about the loss of her mother and her mother’s family home, leaving herself, her fiancé David, and David’s mother and 14-year old son facing homelessness. Your support was there when FACETS stepped in, moving Mikora’s family to our Next Steps Family Shelter of 18 fully-furnished apartments. There, Mikora was uplifted by her caring case manager Hilda, who made sure she never gave up hope. David found a job through the Financial Stability Program, and Mikora’s family found their own apartment. Through your support of FACETS, Mikora could rest easy at night knowing her family was safely and stably HOME.

Whether you bought your ticket, played the exciting games, took home a prize from our spectacular Silent and Live Auctions, or raised your bid in the live appeal, YOU made this event a success for folks like Mikora who need your help. YOU stepped up when no one else would, to make sure EVERYONE in Fairfax County has a warm bed, someone to trust, and a place to call “home.” On behalf of our staff, volunteers, and the people we serve… thank you.

Weren’t able to attend? Make a generous gift to keep the support for Mikora going!

FACETS is gearing up for the Hypothermia Prevention and Response Program, beginning December 1st. Saving lives from the cold and connecting with those most vulnerable in Fairfax County is not possible without your support. This year’s Hypothermia Prevention Shelters will be operated at 31 Church locations in Fairfax County. These sites offer a delicious dinner, a warm place to sleep, resources, professional case management services and breakfast the next morning, helping our neighbors experiencing homelessness find respite from the cold winter nights and a path to a home.

In operation since 2003, the program has evolved from solely offering a safe haven to also offering life-enhancing programs. In the 2017-2018 season, FACETS served 305 guests in our Hypothermia Prevention and Response Program. Many guests engaged in case management services, leading to 38 individuals being rapidly rehoused and not returning to sleeping in the woods, their cars or on the streets at the conclusion of the program.
