The Next Steps Shelter Case Management Supervisor oversees a team of Case Managers providing services to families experiencing homelessness in Region 1 Fairfax County. This program operates through scattered-site apartments, townhomes and single-family homes located in Alexandria VA. Working in partnership with the Fairfax County Office to Prevent and End Homelessness (OPEH), the Case Management Supervisor ensures that families receive safe temporary shelter, high quality, trauma-informed care, and comprehensive supportive services to promote successful transitions to permanent housing.
This role provides direct supervision to case management staff, including coaching, mentoring, and supporting professional development. The Case Management Supervisor is responsible for ensuring compliance with programmatic and funding requirements; maintain service quality standards and strengthening service delivery through collaboration with community partners.
The Supervisor serves as a key leader within the shelter program and represents the agency both internally and externally with clients, stakeholders and funders. The ideal candidate is an experienced and adaptable leader who is highly motivated, quick to learn, and skilled in delivering community based services. This individual demonstrates strong organizational, communication and problem-solving skills, and is deeply committed to supporting families on their path to stable, permanent housing.

We meet their emergency needs through our wrap around services and community partnerships and help individuals and families experience safe and stable housing after years of uncertainty and instability. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervise, coach, and support a team of Case Managers, including conducting regular supervision meetings, performance evaluations, and ongoing professional development.
- Serve as the hiring Manager for shelter program staff.
- Oversee the development, implementation, and review of individualized service and housing plans to support timely transitions to permanent housing.
- Maintain a safe, supportive, and trauma-informed environment for shelter clients.
- Provide guidance and support to staff in managing complex cases, crisis situations, and conflict resolution, including safety planning and de-escalation.
- Establish and maintain consistent communication, both verbal and written, among stakeholders, including case managers, operations staff, tenant, Landlord, referral sources, partner agencies, and financial entities.
- Advocate for and actively assist families in accessing services, including mental health, substance use treatment, intellectual disability services, housing referrals, financial assistance, employment, childcare, medical care, and community-based supports.
- Monitor staff documentation and data entry to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with program requirements, including HMIS and funder standards.
- Ensure compliance with Fairfax County Office to Prevent and End Homelessness (OPEH) guidelines, FACETS Program policies, and all applicable federal, state and local regulations.
- Track and analyze program outcomes, including housing placements, length of stay, and service engagement; use data to inform program improvements.
- Coordinate and collaborate with community partners, including housing providers, social service agencies, healthcare providers, and schools, to enhance service delivery.
- Conduct case conferencing and team meetings to ensure coordinated, effective care for families.
- Participate in program audits, reporting, and quality assurance activities; prepare reports for leadership and funders.
- Support staff scheduling, coverage planning, and on-call responsibilities as needed.
- Support families in achieving financial stability, securing childcare, obtaining employment and transitioning to permanent housing.
- Represent FACETS in community meetings, coordinated entry system meetings and other collaborative forums; build and maintain relationships with housing providers, community partners and stakeholders.
- Ensure program practices align with Housing First and Trauma informed care models.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Human Services or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years in a supervisory role within a shelter or residential program.
- Demonstrated experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness or other vulnerable populations.
- Strong leadership and supervisory skills, with the ability to coach, mentor, and develop staff in a supportive, team-oriented environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage diverse audiences including Clients, Staff, Landlords, and Community Partners.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex cases, exercise sound judgment, and respond effectively in crisis situations.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed care, strengths-based case management practices.
- Knowledge of community resources, housing resources, homelessness response systems, and public benefits.
- Experience using the Homeless Management and Information System (HMIS) or similar data systems.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with community stakeholders, service providers and funding partners.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality, and high ethical standards.
- Flexibility and adaptability to changing program needs, and priorities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Microsoft Excel, or related software.
- Availability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and staggered shifts as needed to support shelter operations.
- Candidate must possess a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, good driving record, and personal car insurance.
- Candidate must be able to operate a 15-passenger van.
- Successful completion of required background checks.
- Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit for prolonged periods while working at a desk and using a computer.
- Ability to work in a variety of environments, including office settings, community locations, and occasional outdoor environments.
- Must be able to lift and carry at least 20 pounds when necessary.
- Must be able to attend occasional meetings at other FACETS office locations within Fairfax County, including three (3) annual organization-wide fundraising events each year.
Salary Range:
$60,000-$68,000 annually
