Director of Communications and Grants
POSITION: Director of Communications and Grants
REPORTS TO: Senior Director of Development & Communications
CATEGORY: Full-Time/Exempt/Permanent
LOCATION: In-Person, Fairfax, Virginia
FACETS is seeking a Director of Institutional Giving & Communications — a writer, strategist, and relationship builder who wants to shape how a community understands its own capacity to end poverty. This is a build role. FACETS has 33 years of community trust, thousands of donors, and a fundraising trajectory that has grown exponentially in two years. We have invested significantly in brand elevation and messaging, the focus of this role is to scale these across Fairfax County and mobilize the community to solve poverty through supporting FACETS. You will build FACETS’ digital and communications presence and take donors to the next level of their donor journey — and lead the design and execution of a $1 million online fundraising campaign aligned with our fiscal calendar. Your portfolio expands to encompass foundation and corporate grant writing, building the institutional funding pipeline that sustains our work for years to come.
About the Organization:
FACETS is a non-profit organization that opens doors by helping parents, their children, and individuals who suffer the effects of poverty in Fairfax County. We meet their emergency needs through our wrap around services and community partnerships, and help individuals and families experience safe and stable housing after years of uncertainty and instability. We strive to ensure that every person in our community has a place they can call home. Here at FACETS, every team member plays a role in making a difference in the lives of our most vulnerable neighbors.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Build the Communications Foundation
- Launch FACETS’ social media presence from scratch — platform strategy, content calendar, brand voice, and posting cadence across channels to grow donor visibility and community engagement.
- Own all external digital communications: website content, email marketing, and monthly e-newsletters — establishing a consistent, mission-driven voice across every touchpoint.
- Serve as brand steward, ensuring consistency of voice, messaging, and visual identity across all platforms.
Lead the $1 Million Online Fundraising Campaign
- Design and execute a comprehensive digital fundraising campaign aligned with FACETS’ fiscal calendar — integrating giving days, seasonal appeals, recurring donor cultivation, and milestone moments into a cohesive multi-channel narrative.
- Develop campaign messaging, creative assets, donor journey touchpoints, email sequences, and social content that inspire action across individual, corporate, faith-based, and community audiences.
- Set benchmarks, track performance, and use data to refine strategy in real time.
Expanded Institutional Giving Portfolio
- Lead grant writing and reporting for foundation and corporate funders — producing compelling, well-researched proposals and timely, data-driven reports that deepen funder relationships.
- Develop proposal templates and writing standards to build a replicable, scalable grants infrastructure.
- Partner with the Senior Director to align grant narratives with organizational priorities and the communications story built — ensuring a unified voice across all funding channels.
Required Qualifications
- Exceptional writing skills — the ability to move people through words, tell stories with humanity, and communicate with clarity across registers.
- Strong digital fluency: social media platforms, email marketing tools (Mailchimp, Constant Contact, or similar), and content management systems.
- Experience designing and executing fundraising or marketing campaigns with measurable outcomes.
- Highly self-directed and organized — able to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and build systems where none exist.
- Genuine commitment to the mission: alleviating the suffering caused by homelessness, poverty, and hunger in Fairfax County.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel locally.
Preferred Qualifications
- Grant writing experience or demonstrated ability to write compelling narrative proposals.
- Background in nonprofit communications, public relations, or development.
- Experience with CRM platforms and donation tools (DonorPerfect, Salesforce, Bloomerang, or similar).
- Familiarity with digital analytics tools and the ability to translate data into strategy.
- Experience working with organizations serving low-income populations, individuals experiencing homelessness, or food-insecure communities.
